Cheap Reseller Hosting (2026): Cost per Client Account, and the Truth About 'Free' Plans

Posted Oct 13, 2026

The cheapest reseller hosting per client is KnownHost's Basic+ plan: $9.98 a month on a 3-year commitment, renewing at $16.96, for 25 cPanel accounts. Filled, that's 40 cents per account at the intro price and 68 cents at renewal, the lowest of the plans we could price on 9 Oct 2026. If you'd rather avoid a 3-year prepay, HostPapa's Bronze (from $14.95 on a 36-month term, 20 accounts) and ScalaHosting's Scala 1 (renewing at $19.95, 20 accounts) are the next cheapest.

Cheap reseller plans are cheap because they cap accounts, not because the hosting is worse. That's a direct result of how cPanel licences have been priced since 2019, explained below. This page suits freelancers and small agencies hosting up to a few dozen client sites. If you need root access, custom software or hundreds of accounts, skip ahead to when to step up to a VPS.

The cheapest reseller plans, intro vs renewal

Entry tiers as listed on 9-10 Oct 2026. The intro price needs the term shown; the renewal is what you pay from the second term on, and it's the number to price clients against. "Check current price" means the vendor's page didn't give a readable figure from the US, so we print none.

HostGator also sells reseller hosting, but its line is now VPS-based ("Snappy" tiers from 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 100 GB NVMe) with cPanel/WHM listed as optional. Its entry tier, Snappy 2000, lists at $49.99 a month and renews at $68.99 (US read, 10 Oct 2026; the checkout link uses a 3-year term), well above the cPanel plans in the table. Its terms also say usage mustn't exceed 25% of system resources for more than 90 seconds, worth knowing before you put a busy store on it.

Cost per client account: the honest unit

A low monthly sticker can hide a high cost per client. Divide the plan price by the number of accounts it allows, and compare plans on that. The chart shows each plan full, which flatters everyone: at 10 clients, KnownHost's Basic+ renewal works out at $1.70 per account rather than 68 cents.

Grouped bar chart of cost per account when the plan is full. KnownHost Basic+: $0.40 intro, $0.68 renewal. HostPapa Bronze: $0.75 intro, renewal figure not clear. ChemiCloud Kickstart: $0.87 renewal, intro not shown. ScalaHosting Scala 1: $1.00 renewal, intro not shown.

Namecheap's Nebula, not charted because its page shows no intro/renewal split, works out at about 92 cents an account at $22.88 a month billed yearly. By either measure the spread is under a dollar per client. That's why the cheapest plan is rarely the best value on its own: a missing billing app, a short refund window or a forced 3-year prepay can cost more than the per-account saving. ChemiCloud, for instance, costs more per account at renewal than KnownHost but includes Blesta on Kickstart and offers 45 days to change your mind.

KnownHost Basic+

The lowest cost per account at both intro and renewal. Basic+ includes 25 cPanel accounts and 40 GB NVMe, with white-label branding and custom nameservers. Two caveats: the listed prices are "based on 3 year commitment", and WHMCS is an add-on rather than included. A non-US reading of the same page showed a different promo, so confirm the price you're quoted on KnownHost's reseller page. We couldn't find its refund window on that page, so ask before you prepay.

HostPapa Bronze

The cheapest way in without KnownHost's 3-year commitment, though HostPapa's own intro also assumes a 36-month term. Bronze is $14.95 a month for 20 cPanel accounts and 50 GB NVMe, with a WHMCS billing licence listed on every tier, private nameservers and brandable cPanel/WHM. HostPapa says plans renew "at the regular rate". Its comparison table and its "Save" badges suggest different regular prices, so get the renewal figure at checkout on HostPapa's reseller plans before you commit.

ScalaHosting Entry Cloud

The cheap option with no account cap. Entry Cloud runs ScalaHosting's own SPanel rather than cPanel, on a cloud server with 2 CPU cores and 2 GB RAM: $14.95 a month, renewing at $39.95. SPanel carries no licence fee, so you can create as many accounts as the resources hold. If you're happy outside cPanel, see ScalaHosting's cloud reseller tiers. If your clients expect cPanel, its Scala 1 tier renews at $19.95 for 20 accounts.

Why cPanel's per-account pricing shapes cheap reseller plans

Until mid-2019, a cPanel licence covered a whole server: $20 a month on a VPS or $45 on a dedicated machine, however many accounts it held. In June 2019 cPanel moved to account-based licences (Admin $20 for up to 5 accounts, Pro $30 for up to 30, Premier $45 for up to 100, then $0.20 a month for each extra), as The Register reported at the time. On cPanel's pricing page on 9 Oct 2026, Solo is $29.99 for one account, Admin $35.99, Pro $53.99 and Premier $69.99 for up to 100, plus $0.49 for every account beyond that.

Timeline of cPanel licensing. Before 2019: unlimited accounts, VPS $20 a month, dedicated $45. June 2019: Admin $20 for 5 accounts, Pro $30 for 30, Premier $45 for 100, plus $0.20 per extra account. October 2026: Solo $29.99 for 1, Admin $35.99 for 5, Pro $53.99 for 30, Premier $69.99 for 100, plus $0.49 per extra account.

Every cPanel account a reseller creates now costs the host something, and the cost keeps rising: Premier is up 56% since 2019, and each account over 100 costs more than twice as much. Hosts pass that on through account caps, which is why Namecheap's Nebula stops at 25 accounts with no way to raise it, and why ScalaHosting offers unlimited accounts only on its licence-free SPanel tiers. These are cPanel's retail prices; what a host pays under volume deals isn't published, so read them as a direction of travel rather than any host's exact cost.

When a reseller plan says unlimited cPanel accounts, ask who's paying the licence for account number 101.

'Free reseller hosting' and 'master reseller': what they really are

We found no host offering a genuinely free cPanel reseller plan on the pages we read on 9 Oct 2026. Given that a host pays a licence fee for each cPanel account, a free plan would lose money on every account you create. When you see "free reseller hosting", read the terms: it usually turns out to be a trial, an ad-supported deal or an affiliate scheme described as reselling. If you want to earn from hosting without paying for a plan, an affiliate program is the honest version; our guide to reseller hosting vs becoming an affiliate compares the two.

A master reseller plan lets you create reseller accounts of your own in WHM, so your customers can resell to theirs. Cheap master reseller offers have two problems. Every account your sub-resellers create still counts towards cPanel's per-account licensing, so the account cap bites sooner than it looks. And support runs through more layers: an end client's problem goes through their reseller, then you, then your host. Unless you're building a hosting brand with resellers under it, a standard reseller plan is simpler and usually cheaper.

When to step up to a VPS

A reseller plan stays cheaper than your own server for longer than most people expect. Put 30 client sites on your own VPS with a cPanel Pro licence and you pay $53.99 a month for the licence alone, before the server. A DigitalOcean Droplet with 4 GiB RAM and 2 vCPUs lists at $24 a month, so the total is about $78. KnownHost's Standard+ reseller plan holds 50 accounts and renews at $22.06, with the server managed for you.

Move up when the reasons are technical, not financial: a client needs root access, custom software, a guaranteed CPU allocation, or you've outgrown the largest tier's account cap (Namecheap's tops out at 150, Hosting.com's at 200). At that point a managed VPS with a licence-free panel such as SPanel, or your own server, makes sense. We cover the move in scaling from reseller to your own servers, and the trade-offs in reseller hosting vs VPS.

Edge cases on cheap plans

  • A 3-year prepay you can't use. If you're testing whether reselling suits you, a long commitment at a low monthly rate is still a large upfront payment. Check the refund window first.
  • One heavy client. Cheap plans enforce CPU, memory and inode limits per account. A busy store can hit them long before disk fills, which our explainer on overselling and resource limits covers.
  • Switching panels. Moving clients from cPanel to Enhance or SPanel is a migration project, not a toggle. Factor that into a cheap non-cPanel offer.
  • Billing on top. A plan without billing software means a separate licence or manual invoicing; see free WHMCS and billing options.

Price clients against the renewal, not the promo, and the cheapest plan that holds your real client count is usually the right one. To compare cheap plans with the rest of the market, see our best reseller hosting ranking.

Cheap reseller hosting: FAQ

What is the cheapest reseller hosting?
Per client account, KnownHost Basic+: $9.98 a month on a 3-year commitment, renewing at $16.96, for 25 cPanel accounts, or 40 to 68 cents per account when full. Prices as listed on 9 Oct 2026; confirm the term before buying.
Is there free reseller hosting?
We found no genuinely free cPanel reseller plan on any vendor page we read on 9 Oct 2026. Hosts pay a per-account cPanel licence, so 'free' offers are usually trials, ad-supported deals or affiliate schemes. Read the terms carefully.
Can I get a cheap reseller account with cPanel?
Yes. KnownHost Basic+ (25 accounts), HostPapa Bronze (20) and ScalaHosting Scala 1 (20, renewing at $19.95) all include cPanel/WHM. Cheap cPanel plans cap accounts because cPanel licences are priced per account.
What is cheap master reseller hosting?
A plan that lets you create reseller accounts for others, not just cPanel accounts. Every sub-reseller's accounts still count towards licensing and support runs through extra layers, so it only suits people building a hosting brand.
When should I move from reseller hosting to a VPS?
When clients need root access, custom software or guaranteed resources, or you outgrow the largest plan's account cap. On cost alone, 30 accounts on your own VPS with cPanel Pro run about $78 a month at retail prices.
