cPanel Alternatives for Resellers (2026): Licence Cost per Account

Posted Oct 26, 2026

The best cPanel alternative for a reseller depends on whether you rent a reseller plan or run your own server. On a packaged reseller plan the panel licence is the host's bill, so the question is simply which panel your clients will log in to. On your own server the licence is your bill, and at 100 client accounts cPanel Premier costs $69.99 a month against $29 for DirectAdmin Standard and about $15 for Enhance, as listed on 18 Oct 2026. SPanel costs nothing extra, but only on ScalaHosting servers.

Stay on cPanel if your clients already know it, you depend on its migration tools, or you resell fewer than about 30 accounts on a host that absorbs the licence. Look at the alternatives once you run your own VPS, pass a few dozen accounts, or find the licence line growing faster than your client list. Every price below was read from the vendor's own pricing page on 18 Oct 2026 and excludes VAT.

Why resellers look past cPanel

cPanel charges by the account. Its current list runs from Solo, which licenses one account at $29.99 a month, to Premier, which covers up to 100 accounts for $69.99 a month and adds $0.49 for each account above that. The pricing page also notes that a WHM reseller account counts as an account. For someone hosting clients on their own server, that means the licence grows with every client signed, which is the opposite of how a reseller wants costs to behave.

On a packaged reseller plan you rarely see this directly, because the host buys the licence and folds it into the plan price. You still pay it, though. It shows up as a smaller account allowance or a higher renewal, which is why our guide to cheap reseller hosting measures every plan in cost per client account rather than headline price.

Licence cost at 100 client accounts

To compare panels fairly we priced the same job on each: one server hosting 100 client accounts, licence only, monthly billing, VAT excluded. Hardware, backups and support are separate in every case. These are list prices from the vendors' own pages, not quotes, and Enhance bills per hosted website rather than per account, so we treated each client as one website.

Bar chart of monthly panel licence cost for 100 client accounts: cPanel Premier $69.99, DirectAdmin Standard $29.00, Enhance $15.00, SPanel $0 but only on ScalaHosting servers.

The gap widens as you grow. At 250 accounts cPanel Premier comes to about $143.49 a month ($69.99 plus 150 extra accounts at $0.49), Enhance to $37.50, and DirectAdmin Standard stays at $29 because it has no account limit. That's our arithmetic on the published rates. DirectAdmin also lists an automatic 15% to 40% bulk discount once you hold four or more Standard licences, which matters if you run several servers.

DirectAdmin: the flat-rate option

DirectAdmin is the closest thing to a like-for-like cPanel swap for a classic reseller setup. Its Standard licence is $29 a month with no cap on accounts or domains, Lite is $15 for 10 accounts and 50 domains, and Personal PLUS is $5 for two accounts and 20 domains, which suits testing but not reselling. Its page promises protection against arbitrary price increases, with exceptions for inflation and currency changes. It also notes that a licence bought from a third-party reseller without a server attached breaks its terms, so buy direct or lease it with the server.

The trade-off is familiarity. Clients who have used cPanel for years will need a short walkthrough, and some cPanel-only scripts and plugins won't apply. Plan the migration carefully; our notes on moving from a reseller plan to your own server cover the order of operations.

Enhance: per-website pricing and clusters

Enhance prices by hosted website: $0.15 per site a month up to 5,000 sites, $0.10 from 5,001 to 25,000, with a $10 monthly minimum. Addon, alias and subdomains, staging sites and soft-deleted sites are not billed, and you can add as many servers to one cluster as you like without a second licence. There is no long-term contract. Below about 67 sites you simply pay the $10 minimum, and Enhance stays cheaper than DirectAdmin Standard until roughly 193 sites, where $0.15 a site passes $29. That's our arithmetic on the listed rates.

Enhance also turns up on packaged reseller plans. Hosting.com, the 2025 rebrand of A2 Hosting, now titles its reseller page "Enhance Reseller Hosting Plans & Servers", so you can try the panel without running a server. If you're moving existing cPanel clients, budget time to test email and DNS on each account first. See Hosting.com's Enhance reseller plans.

Plesk and SPanel

Plesk sells three editions: Web Admin for up to 10 domains, Web Pro for up to 30, and Web Host with unlimited domains, which is the reseller edition. Its pricing page did not show readable prices from the US on 18 Oct 2026, so we don't quote one. If you or your clients already work in Plesk, ask for a Web Host quote and set it against the DirectAdmin and Enhance figures above before deciding.

SPanel is ScalaHosting's own panel. Scala says it comes at no additional cost for its clients, unlike cPanel's account-based model, and it has a WHMCS module for billing automation. You can't buy it for another host's server, so you're choosing a host as much as a panel. Scala's Entry Cloud reseller plan lists unlimited accounts with 2 CPU cores and 2 GB of RAM and renews at $39.95 a month; its first-term price follows Scala's sales, and on 26 Oct 2026 a Black Friday offer showed $11.21 a month. Its cPanel reseller plans renew at the same price they start at: $19.95 for 20 accounts, $34.95 for 40 and $49.95 for 60. Compare ScalaHosting's SPanel and cPanel plans.

Decision guide: packaged reseller plan with cPanel-trained clients, stay on cPanel; own Linux server with dozens of accounts, DirectAdmin; many small sites, Enhance; no licence cost and one host is fine, SPanel on ScalaHosting.

Switching panels without losing clients

Moving clients between panels is a migration, not a setting. Each panel stores accounts, mailboxes and DNS zones differently, so plan the move one client at a time and in this order:

  1. Lower DNS TTLs a day or two before the move, so changes propagate quickly.
  2. Move one low-risk client first and test the site, email sending and receiving, and any cron jobs.
  3. Update your billing automation (WHMCS, Blesta or similar) to provision on the new panel before you sign new clients.
  4. Tell clients about their new login a week ahead, with a short guide in your own branding.
  5. Keep the old server running until the last mailbox has been checked.

Budget more time than the technical steps suggest. Most of a panel move goes on checking each client's mail and DNS records after the switch, and on answering clients who notice a different login screen and assume something has broken. A short note in advance, with a screenshot of the new panel, prevents most of those tickets. Our WHM and cPanel day-one guide lists the account settings worth copying across, and the billing options for resellers explain which billing tools already integrate with each panel.

Edge cases

  • You're on a packaged reseller plan. The panel licence is the host's cost. Compare plans on renewal price per client, not on which panel is cheapest to license.
  • You resell fewer than five accounts. cPanel Admin covers up to five for $35.99 a month, and DirectAdmin Lite covers 10 for $15. Neither is likely to matter as much as your time.
  • Clients run many addon domains. Enhance doesn't bill addon or alias domains, while cPanel counts accounts, so a client with ten domains in one account costs one unit on both.

Whatever panel you choose, the host underneath decides uptime, support and renewal pricing. Our best reseller hosting ranking compares the plans themselves, intro price beside renewal.

cPanel alternatives for resellers: FAQ

What is the cheapest alternative to cPanel for resellers?
On your own server, Enhance and DirectAdmin are the cheapest paid options: Enhance charges $0.15 per website a month with a $10 minimum, and DirectAdmin Standard is $29 a month for unlimited accounts (both read 18 Oct 2026, excluding VAT). SPanel has no licence fee but only runs on ScalaHosting.
How much does a cPanel licence cost in 2026?
On 18 Oct 2026 cPanel listed Solo (1 account) at $29.99 a month, Admin (up to 5) at $35.99, Pro (up to 30) at $53.99 and Premier (up to 100) at $69.99 plus $0.49 per extra account, monthly and excluding VAT. Annual billing lowers the first three by about 8%.
Is DirectAdmin good for reseller hosting?
Yes, for resellers running their own Linux server. The Standard licence has no account or domain limit at a flat $29 a month, and it supports reseller-level accounts. Clients used to cPanel need a short introduction to the different layout.
Can I use Enhance on a reseller plan instead of my own server?
Yes. Some hosts sell reseller plans built on Enhance; Hosting.com's reseller page is titled 'Enhance Reseller Hosting Plans & Servers'. You get the panel without running servers or paying the licence directly.
Does switching panels affect my clients?
Yes. Each client gets a new login and interface, and mail and DNS have to be moved account by account. Migrate one client first, test email and DNS, then move the rest in batches.
